Tournament Operations Manager (TOM) FAQ

What is TOM?

TOM is the Pokémon Tournament Operations Manager application. This software is used to run Tournaments for competitive Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon Video Game, and Pokémon GO matches. It can be used to run friendly League tournaments in a variety of formats, but it must be used when running formal Pokémon events such as League Challenges and League Cups.

Why can I see video game and Pokémon GO tournaments in TOM?

TOM can be used for a variety of offerings that can be run in a tournament format, a casual format, or as a Premier Event. Once eligible, these titles can also be uploaded in conjunction with Play! Tools. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to run these events or not, please contact customer support.

How do I add a competitor who arrived late?

Competitors that are late can be added from the Tournament screen once it is in progress. If a competitor is late, they will receive an automatic loss in the next round and their pairing will be weighted as a lower priority compared to those who arrived on time.

TOM crashed while running a tournament. What do I do?

TOM asks you to save a Tournament Data File (TDF) before you start your Tournament. This is then autosaved at regular intervals. You can also manually save the file at any time. If TOM crashes in the middle of a round, you may need to restart the round. For this reason, we recommend printing your match slips and distributing them to competitors so that you can reenter the results. We also strongly recommend using an independent round timer so that if TOM stops working mid-round, both you and your competitors have an accurate view of the time they have remaining in that round.

What is a Sanctioned ID?

A Sanctioned ID is the unique identifier for your tournament. It is needed for events that award Championship Points (League Challenges and League Cups). Submit your application through the Play! Tools portal at least two weeks before the event takes place to ensure that you receive a Sanctioned ID before your tournament. Once your event has been approved, your Sanctioned ID will appear beneath the name of your tournament and can be entered into TOM. Do not submit a Tournament Data File without having first entered your Sanctioned ID.

How does TOM calculate pairings?

TOM is designed to calculate pairings based on registered participants. If one age division has lower numbers, the tournament may be converted into an age-modified tournament, in which competitors from different age divisions will play together. This is not an error. If this happens, please award prizes to the winner of each age division appropriately—one Junior, one Senior, and one Masters Division Champion.

At the end of Swiss rounds, each age division will separate into its own standings and, if applicable, single-elimination top cut.
